I love the movie “The Sound of Music.” With the mountains, the music, and Christopher Plummer, what’s not to love? The movie premiered in New York City March 2, 1965 (according to IMDB), and started its way around the country and across the world. I first saw the movie during a matinee in Marshfield, Wisconsin. I must have been only 3 or 4 years old. But even then, I wanted to be Julie Andrews. I had confidence, it seems.
“The Sound of Music” was the first movie I’d seen that had an intermission, as Maria was leaving the Von Trapp household after “So Long, Farewell.” At that point my older sisters and brother and I left the theatre, so I thought the movie was over. I was thrilled when my oldest sister said we could go back in for more!
My parents bought the soundtrack, an album I listened to time and again, singing along with Julie and staring at the photos of her and Christopher Plummer. When my grandmother moved to a nursing home in 1980, I was given her copy of the album. Evidently, I must have done something good.
In 1988 my husband and I travelled to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Not exactly the Alps, but close enough, so I did my best Julie Andrews imitation, spinning in a mountain meadow, as Lon snapped this photo.
I haven’t sung soprano since high school; these days I’m a tenor, at best. But that doesn’t stop me from singing along with Julie every chance I get. I think I’ll go play that soundtrack again. The hills are alive, you know.

I hear that they are going to remake TSOM. I will probably see it when it gets to theatres around here. I usually like remakes, if I liked the original, even if it is not as good as the original.
